This is how I understand divorce from bed and board. It is a court-ordered separation. The couple remains married but are separate and apart from each other. This is a fault-based action taken by the court per the request of the injured party.

Divorce from Bed and Board... 

• is a way to get a spouse out of the residence.  
• is not a true divorce in that if you were to remarry, it would be bigamy.
• keeps the marital contract intact
• can only be obtained by the injured party
• is not an option in every state

Grounds to file for Divorce from Bed and Board...

• Abuse
• Adultery
• Mistreatment
• Excessive use of drugs and alcohol to the point that it makes the marriage intolerable
• Abandonment
