Navigating Healthcare After Divorce: What I Wish I Had Known-Intro to my E-Book
After nearly 40 years of marriage, my ex left without warning. And in the middle of everything that followed, the grief, the logistics, the complete restructuring of my entire life, I had to figure out something I had never had to think about before. Healthcare.
For nearly four decades I had been covered under my ex-husband’s insurance through his job. I never had to think about premiums, deductibles, networks, or enrollment windows. I just handed over a card and that was that. Suddenly that card was gone and I was standing in the middle of a system I did not understand with no roadmap and no one to guide me.
I will be honest. I made mistakes. I panicked. I went without care I needed because I was afraid of costs I did not understand. I sat in doctor’s offices nodding along to terminology I had never heard before, like facility fees and Good Faith Estimates, feeling completely lost and completely alone.
But here is what I have learned over the years of trial, error, and a whole lot of research. Knowledge is power. And once you have the right information, navigating healthcare after divorce becomes something you can actually handle.

Here are a few things every woman should know:
You have options for insurance. COBRA lets you stay on your ex’s plan temporarily but it is often expensive. The ACA Marketplace gives you a Special Enrollment Period after divorce and may offer subsidies based on your income. If you are employed, check with your HR department immediately because losing a spouse’s coverage triggers your own enrollment window at work.
Your prescriptions do not have to break the bank. Free tools like GoodRx, SingleCare, and Optum Perks can save you up to 80% at the pharmacy counter. Always ask your doctor about generic alternatives and never assume the price your pharmacy quotes you is the best available.
Dental and vision care have affordable options too. Staying in network with your insurance is one of the most powerful things you can do for your budget. Dental schools, dental savings plans, and cash pay discounts are all real options that most people never think to ask about.
Medical bills are negotiable. You have the legal right to a Good Faith Estimate before any scheduled procedure. You can ask for cash pay rates, dispute billing errors, and request financial hardship assistance. Most people simply do not know to ask.
Elective procedures are not out of reach. With the right planning, HSA and FSA accounts, strategic timing, and smart financing choices, the procedures you want and need are more achievable than you might think.
I have spent years learning all of this the hard way so that you do not have to. And I put everything I know into a 55 page eBook called Know Your Options: A Woman’s Guide to Affordable Healthcare After Divorce.
It covers health insurance, prescriptions, dental care, vision care, medical procedures, elective treatments, and even includes a bonus chapter teaching you exactly how to search Google to find the resources and programs available in your specific area. It is practical, honest, and written by someone who has been exactly where you are right now.
If you are navigating healthcare after divorce and you are not sure where to start, this book was written for you.
You can find it in my Etsy shop at embracejoydesigns.etsy.com. I truly hope something inside it saves you time, money, and a little bit of heartache along the way.
Knowledge is power. And you deserve to have it.
God Bless You On Your Journey.
